Overview
Sentinel One is a consumer facing smart city app designed to help residents monitor, manage, and optimize household utilities. Built as part of a large scale smart city ecosystem, the project focused on translating complex infrastructure into a calm, intuitive daily experience.
Context
Smart city platforms often prioritize infrastructure over residents, resulting in fragmented tools and low engagement. Utility apps are typically reactive, data heavy, and emotionally disconnected. Users expect clarity, immediacy, and tangible value from connected living products.

The Problem
Residents had no real time visibility into energy usage, no emotional incentive to act sustainably, and no unified control layer. Utility data felt abstract and delayed, leading to disengagement, unpredictable bills, and a lack of personal accountability.

Objective
The goal was to shift utilities from a monthly obligation to a daily, intuitive habit. Sentinel One needed to feel trustworthy, simple, and rewarding while enabling residents to clearly understand impact, take action instantly, and feel progress over time.
Design Strategy
Sentinel One was designed as a fitness tracker for the home. By treating energy consumption like a measurable behavior, the app reframes sustainability as progress driven, goal oriented, and motivating. Data becomes feedback, not friction.

Key Features as a Behavior System
Sentinel One’s core features are designed as a closed behavior loop. Real time tracking, comparative insights, goals, and rewards work together to turn passive utility data into continuous feedback. Each feature reinforces awareness, motivation, and action through clear cause and effect.

Smart Appliance Control and Remote Orchestration
Appliance management is centralized into a single control layer that supports real time toggles, scheduling, and environmental feedback. Progressive disclosure keeps interactions lightweight while allowing deeper control when needed, making complex home systems feel intuitive and dependable.

Goal Driven Sustainability and Rewards
Energy reduction is presented as progress, not restriction. Visual goal tracking, achievement states, and reward points transform sustainability into a motivating system. The interface emphasizes encouragement and momentum, helping users build long term habits through visible, attainable milestones.

Integrated Billing With Actionable Feedback
Billing is reframed from a static monthly outcome into an interactive moment. Residents see how behavior translates into savings through clear comparisons, incentives, and redemption cues. This tight feedback loop reinforces trust and directly connects usage patterns to financial outcomes.

Real Time Intelligence and Predictive Feedback
Live consumption data is paired with contextual signals like off peak alerts, regional pricing, and projected savings. By visualizing both current behavior and optimized outcomes, the interface shifts users from monitoring to decision making without overwhelming them with raw metrics.

Tangible Outcomes That Changed Daily Behavior
Sentinel One translated insight into action. High weekly engagement and reward redemption proved that residents were not just viewing data but responding to it. Utility management shifted from a passive monthly task into an active, repeatable habit embedded into everyday life.

Real Benefits, Felt and Articulated by Residents
The strongest validation came from residents themselves. Clear visualization, remote control, and unified access solved long standing friction points. What was previously confusing became legible, and what was easy to forget became effortless to manage through a single interface.

A Product That Works Wherever Life Happens
Sentinel One fits naturally into real life contexts. Whether at home or away, residents retained awareness and control over their utilities. The experience remained consistent across moments, reinforcing trust and positioning the product as reliable infrastructure rather than occasional software.
Impact and Learnings
Sentinel One demonstrates how behavioral design, clear information architecture, and real time feedback loops can drive long term engagement in civic products. Designing for trust and motivation proved more impactful than feature density alone.
